Who runs this site
I'm Joel Kelly. I grew up in Wisconsin and still spend my seasons here, at a family cabin on Deer Lake near Tomahawk, with a Polaris XPEDITION that earns its keep hauling gear through the Northwoods. I'll be direct: I'm not a lifelong hardwater angler. That is why nothing on this site rests on my say-so. Conditions claims cite public data and state guidance. Gear verdicts show the research and tradeoffs behind them.
Sportsman Authority is part of The Authority Suite, a network of specialist publications I build and operate. The standard across all of them is simple: show the source, explain the tradeoff, date the guidance, and disclose the commercial relationship.
How a pick earns its place
Research first. Retail path second.
Every recommendation starts with a specific use case, then earns its place through a traceable research trail. A retailer link is the last step, not the reason a product appears.
Identify the exact model
We name the model, size, generation, and included pieces so a shopper can compare the same thing across sources.
Read the primary material
Specifications, manuals, warranty terms, agency guidance, and public data anchor the facts before commentary enters.
Show the tradeoff
We explain who the pick fits, where it falls short, and which alternative makes more sense when the priorities change.
Keep the path auditable
Research dates, retailer relationships, and corrections stay visible. We do not claim firsthand testing that did not happen.
When the evidence is incomplete, the page says so. A useful limitation is better than a confident guess.
What we cover
Fishing, with ice fishing as the founding wedge. Hunting accessories including optics, trail cameras, stands, blinds, calls, decoys, camo, and archery. UTV, ATV, and dirt bike accessories. Heated gear and cold-weather apparel. Working dog gear and game processing. Women's-specific fits and sizing belong in the normal buying analysis, not in an afterthought section.
What we will not do
We do not sell or link firearms or ammunition. Conditions tools do not assess travel readiness. They are educational references that remain secondary to an on-site check and current agency instructions. We also do not publish scores, awards, or firsthand claims we cannot support.
How the site makes money
Some product links may be affiliate links routed through our own redirect so we can understand which recommendations readers find useful. If a shopper buys through one, the retailer may pay us a commission at no additional cost to the shopper. Recommendations are never for sale.
